Johann Dietrich von Reininghaus / 15.4.1867 – 15.12.1959
Johann Dietrich “Hans” was born in Graz as the seventh child and third and youngest son of Johann Peter and Therese von Reininghaus. Although he had many talents, he initially remained in the family business for several years as an authorized signatory. However, he then chose a different path, switching to agriculture and demonstrating his technical talent in buildings and inventions, among other things. In 1907, he took over the management of the Portorose joint-stock company and built the legendary Palace Hotel in the town of the same name for 2,257,100 crowns.
He was married three times and his first marriage to Virginia “Gina” Agujari produced 6 children, Peter, Theresia, Johanna, Emma, Friedrich and Kurt. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1915 and Gina in turn married Field Marshal Count Conrad von Hötzendorf in her second marriage. His two further marriages to Louise van den Haende and Elisabeth Seidl remained childless.
He had a deep friendship with Peter Rosegger, and the book “Letters from 1888 to 1917” provides interesting insights into his life.
